If fall 2013 was the season of the oversized boyfriend coat – at least what outerwear is concerned – this year it’s all about the blanket coat. That comfy and cozy wrap that can dub as ahem… well, blanket on an airplane. It may not sound very glamorous, but trust me when I tell you that it looks more elegant than it sounds.

The blanket coat is actually not a new invention. It’s been around for a while, in different forms and variations. Capes, ponchos, cape coats, you name it. As long as it’s loose and the sleeves are wide enough (or non-existent), it falls into pretty much the same category.

How I love it when fashion turns practical and comfortable, without losing it’s charm. From Chloé to Isabel Marant, from Stella McCartney to Burberry Prorsum, every major designer has included the blanket coat into their collection for the coming fall. One of my personal favourites is the version above: the Chloé blanket coat, as seen on Lena Perminova in cream and grey (you can buy Lena Perminova’s Chloé blanket coat here), or in blue, as worn by Anya Ziourova, stylist and fashion director at Tatler Russia (shop similar here).
