It’s no small thing to celebrate thirty years in the fashion business. And how to handle the occasion can keep even the most Zen designer up at night. Do you do a retrospective? Do you try something new? Do you play it safe or take a risk and shake things up? In the case of Donna Karen it was all of the above.
Surrounded by her famous friends both old and new- Bernadette Peters, Trudie Styler Katie Holmes, Hugh Jackman, and Rita Ora- all packed the front row. And her family- Karan’s daughter Gabby was on site to support her mother. The designer decided in the end to create a collection that was a sartorial love letter to the city that has inspired her for three decades – New York.
She opened the show with a triptych of looks that referenced the bodysuit, which is at the heart of her famous Seven Easy Pieces line. But Karan gave this foundation garment a much sexier slant then with her originals. The three looks came sans pants- just thigh high boots.
