Sleek, straight hair has been having a moment, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, and Amanda Seyfried’s smooth, glossy lengths causing us to reflect on the swingy manes of everyone from sixties icon Françoise Hardy to seventies-era Cher of late. But this weekend, while in Atlanta promoting her new fragrance, Rogue Man, Rihanna’s center-parted, glossy strands had us revisiting a very different moment in flat-ironing history: the Y2K years. Reaching past her pearl-adorned Adam Selman crop top, Rihanna’s center-parted hair called equal attention to her flat abs and high-shine lips—a look that could have been plucked directly from early-aughts Atlanta music sensations TLC or Ciara. Balanced with her signature lit-from-within skin, smoky bronzed eye, and warm apricot cheeks, Rihanna’s pared-down approach kept the reference feeling modern. Perhaps this break from the buoyant curls and sporty ponytails Rihanna has been favoring since September is a polished sign of things to come.
