Our Editor’s Top Fashion and Style Tips

One on One with Aneliya Vasilieva – FSM’s Editor In-Chief

You might already know Aneliya Vasilieva – the Editor In-Chief of our fabulous magazine and the stylist whose work takes your breath away with each look she creates. As fashion careers go, Aneliya’s is so impressive it makes your head spin and your (or at least my) heart race with job/life/wardrobe envy. So imagine my delight to be able to work with her and learn from her on a daily basis. Aneliya is every bit as lovely as she is talented and despite the fact she has an extremely hectic job, she spent with me almost an hour quizzing her about her style!

Which designers or brands do you personally wear and why?

What I would like to wear and what I can wear are two very different things! If my lottery numbers came up and I could wear anything it would be Valentino. I absolutely adore what they’re doing and I’d just have everything as it walked off the runway. I just love their whole modern femininity. I’m also a Chanel girl and have a few bits and pieces that I’ve managed to acquire over the years. I love going to Uniqlo as I seem to fit their jeans fantastically well and I also go there for cashmere. Raoul is another brand that I absolutely adore and I think this season brought more from them than just about anywhere else. They’re brilliant. I don’t like being a walking billboard for a brand so Raoul’s everyday things are perfect.

What does style mean to you?

Style should be comfortable, timeless, personal. It shouldn’t look like you’ve tried too hard and should make you go confident as well. So I totally suggest to:

  1. Invest in good pair of jeans
  2. Invest in good tailored jacket
  3. Invest in a crisp white shirt
  4. Invest in a little black dress or any other kind of dress that you can rely on – a dress that makes you feel confident, that you can move in and that is a little bit of sexy as well, so you can wear it at a date night.

What styling advice would you give to busy moms?

Just be who you are – don’t be anything too dramatic, don’t try too hard. Just wear what  looks good on you. A good pair of sunglasses is always a good idea – because it can hide your tired eyes if you’ve been up all night with you children. Also a good sized handbag that looks chic and sophisticated and it’s large enough so that you are able to throw in it all of the kids stuff that every busy, working mom knows about.

How much importance should women place on fashion trends?

It shouldn’t be about fashion trends – for me when I style a client, it’s about what works for the individual. It’s crucial to feel comfortable and to invest in key pieces that you are going to wear season after season. Just keep it simple.

What’s your fail safe outfit that works for all occasions?

Any dress from Victoria Beckham’s ready-to-wear collections. You can literally just step in it, zip it up and you are ready to go. I love the simplicity and the level of elegance of her designs. You can style it accordingly as to whether you are wearing it at work, for meetings, going out with friends and even going out on a date night. They are so simple and yet, when accessorized right, can take from day to night just with switching shoes.

What would you wear on a date night with your boyfriend?

For me the perfect date night look is a sexy dress and comfy pumps. The key is to be comfortable – this should, I hope, go without saying. Painful shoes, skirts and jeans that dig into your stomach are not sexy. You want to be able to walk, sit, and eat without thinking about it.

What’s your philosophy on accessorizing?

Definitely less is more. My personal style has always been minimalistic. I always try to have a statement accessory like a cool handbag or clutch, a pair of classic sunglasses, minimal jewelry if any. I usually wear just earrings and my wrist watch.

What is your advice for women when they get ready for an important event?

Always get as much sleep as you can, drink painful amount of water and try to have fun, don’t stress and enjoy the process of being pampered  – getting your hair and makeup ready for whatever the occasion is.

What’s your top tip for how to pack for traveling?

Never buy a backpack/suitcase that is bigger than carry-on size. If your travel pack/suitcase is small, there is no possible way to overpack. When choosing your clothing for a trip take a look at each item’s fabric and consider the following factors: quality, thickness, weight, wrinkles, transparency, and texture. Your ideal travel clothing is durable, takes up minimal space and weight, is wrinkle-free and opaque, and matches with the rest of your clothing in style and fit.

What fashion and style tip you would want to pass on to young girls?

Love yourself! Appreciate who you are. Always dress for yourself, not for anybody else. Dress in a way that you feel good, so that you can feel the best version of who you can be.
