There have been few first ladies in American history who inspire the world of fashion as First Lady Michelle Obama does. Sure, we had the timeless Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s and a couture queen in Nancy Reagan in the 1980s. Like many first ladies, these women were fashion forces who made fashion in politics captivating, inspiring, exciting, and fun, to be sure. But in her enviably easy sense of self and bold yet perfectly appropriate fashion choices, we have a sitting FLOTUS who has forever changed the way women dress in the White House and beyond.

In can be argued that Michelle Obama’s keen sense of style has helped endear the country, and the world, to her husband, 44th President Barack Hussein Obama. How incredible is that, the thought of fashion influencing the political direction of this country?

For the skeptics of the above statements, consider Michelle Obama’s undeniable likability and how that likability can help the reputation of someone running our country. The Obama campaign is smart enough to know Michelle’s power; she is an asset to her husband’s re-election efforts (and not just with that force of a DNC speech). And why do we love Michelle Obama? The woman is smart, I suppose. As a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, the beautiful 48-year-old is certainly accomplished. We’ve seen her speeches, we’ve watched her interviews, so we can attest to the woman’s eloquence and smarts.With the exception of former first lady, current Secretary of State and all-around B.A.M.F. Hilary Clinton, there have been few first ladies in recent memory who’ve truly impressed their intelligence on the American public.

Coupled with an intelligence that is strong and assuring is this picture of grace, elegance, and appropriateness. Michelle Obama is a woman who knows the designers, big name or not. She is a woman who is comfortable making big fashion choices, and perhaps most important, she is a woman who knows how to make a political statement through dress.

What can we say about Michelle Obama style? Our FLOTUS’s fashion choices are elegant, of course, and absolutely timeless. They can be quite chic and high fashion, too.
